Veterinary Technician
Job Description: The primary role of a Veterinary Technician is to share in our commitment to the delivery of the highest quality of care to our patients. In addition to providing exceptional patient care, our technicians are entrusted to provide excellent care to our clients in a caring and compassionate manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Ability to triage effectively, initiate emergency procedures, and is overall comfortable with all aspects of emergency medicine.
- Perform emergency procedures as instructed by staff veterinarian.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Take vital signs of including temperature, pulse, and respiration.
- Operate and maintain medical equipment.
- Collect, prepare, and process laboratory samples.
- Maintain and promote a safe workplace.
- Demonstrate knowledge of fear-free restraint and handling techniques, as well as general animal safety practices, including recognizing animal behavior patterns.
- Assist staff veterinarians with surgical procedures (as applicable and within the scope of a licensed RVT); prepare surgery suite and patients with strict surgical protocols.
- Calculate drug dosages accurately.
- Assist and support Technician Supervisor in training technician assistants, ensuring that we have a competent and knowledgeable veterinary medical team.
- Work collaboratively and positively with all team members including management, doctors, technicians, and assistants.
- Effectively care for and communicate with clients in person and by phone.
- Assists with client service duties such as answering phones, taking deposits, and assists clients with excellent client service skills.
- Assist with monitoring inventory products and supplies as needed.
- Remain current on trends, techniques, and technology in the profession. Licensed RVTs must maintain current RVT license
Skills and Basic Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; prefer AS or BS in Animal Health Technology.
- Current California RVT preferred.
- Prior emergency experience; drive and desire to develop advanced emergency skills.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Is flexible and adaptable; able to keep composure and focus with changing priorities.
- Ability to do basic math without the aid of a calculator.
- Must be able to spell correctly and write legibly.
- Experience in, or an aptitude for providing excellent client service.
- Has a positive, energetic, and upbeat personality.
- Self-directed, motivated, and organized.
- Accountable, punctual, and reliable.
- Takes initiative and able to manage time well.
- Provide and receive constructive feedback from others.
- Attention to detail and thorough with all work assignments.
- Can work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time and to move constantly throughout the workday.
- Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and climb.
- Ability to use arms, hands, and fingers.
- Ability to reach, turn, push/pull, lift, move, and/or carry up to 50 pounds.
- Strong sensory skills such as visual acuity and good hearing.
- Ability to work in a quiet to moderately noisy environment.
